Discover Breckenridge, CO

With so much to see, there’s something for everyone vacationing in Breckenridge, CO — and we have the perfect vacation rental option for you. But before we talk about our fantastic rental choices, let’s first check out some of the things you can see and do on your vacation here!

Breckenridge is an ideal choice for a vacation all year round. With an average of 25 feet of snow each year, you winter-activity lovers can explore miles of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails, or save yourself some work by dogsledding or sleigh riding. When snowy slopes give way to green mountain sides, the fun doesn’t stop at Breck—you can then explore the many trail networks by bike or horseback. You can also go rafting, kayaking, or fly fishing on the 5 rivers in and around the town.

A few facts about this dream vacation destination: the town of Breckenridge was formally created in November 1859 by General George E. Spencer, who chose the name “Breckinridge” after John C. Breckinridge, who was the 14th Vice President of the United States. When the Civil War broke out, the former vice president sided with the Confederates, so the pro-Union citizens of Breckenridge decided to tinker a bit with the town’s name, and it has been spelled Breckenridge ever since.

The history of Breckenridge as a vacation destination began in the late 1950s when Bill Rounds became interested in bringing skiing to the valley. In the early 1960s, Trygve Berge helped design a ski area and laid out a trail system; and with The Peak 8 Ski Area opening in 1961, Breckenridge became a skiing hotspot. Today, with five huge peaks spanning almost 3000 acres, four terrain parks, one superpipe, and eight bowls – all with awe-inspiring views – the ski resort above Breckenridge is one of the most popular in the whole of the Western Hemisphere.

Breckenridge boasts more than 30 miles of perfectly maintained cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails at the town’s two Nordic centers. The age-old tradition of sledding is still alive at Breckenridge—all you have to do is to grab a toboggan, saucer, or inflatable sled, and you can get ready to relive your childhood as you go whooshing down from the top to the bottom of the hill. If exploring historic mining ruins is more your thing, the expansive trails surrounding Breckenridge will offer you miles of beautiful terrain to explore. Do as the ancient Scandinavians did more than five thousand years ago, and strap on some skinny skis.  Nordic Skiing won’t offer you the thrills of the downhill rush, but for traveling across the snowy country, it is still an exciting option.

Whether you prefer to cycle down the roads or on a trail, the mountain community of Breck is ideal for the biker in you. Winter biking options are endless at Breckenridge—whether you want to take in the panoramic views while road biking or you prefer to enjoy yourself on some of the best mountain bike terrain in the country. And when you visit during the summer months, Breck offers you the perfect trail, recreation path, or mountain pass for your biking pleasure.

Hut trips are an extremely popular year-round option at Breckenridge. Scattered across the Rocky Mountains are 29 backcountry huts connected by 350 miles of gorgeous terrain. Why not venture out to a cozy cabin with a sauna? Or if adventure rather than comfort is your goal, maybe go out to a backcountry shelter far removed from any other signs of civilization. A hut trip will provide you a unique opportunity for backcountry skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing—or just lounging around in front of a cozy fireplace.

The Colorado Rockies are acknowledged as the best fishing options in the Americas—the waters of Breck’s Blue River abound with rainbows, browns, and Cutthroat trout. Every year when summer begins, the Colorado Division of Wildlife stocks Lake Dillon with more than 50,000 rainbow trout—how about casting a line? The area surrounding the lake offers many camping and RV opportunities too—and the lake itself is also excellent for stand-up paddle-boarding and kayaking.

You can even have a unique adventure with man’s best friend! Dog sledding in the winters is a fun activity for the whole family at Breck. Go on a regal horse-drawn carriage down the historic downtown streets of Breckenridge—or trot into the mountains for some spectacular views. A hot air balloon ride is a great way to check out the surrounding Rocky Mountains—the mountains are full of high alpine lakes, all in breathtaking settings. If you are a true adventure junkie, you’ll love the opportunity to indulge in some whitewater rafting on the rivers surrounding Breck during the summers. By the way, Breck happens to be the only town in the world to maintain a Jack Nicklaus-designed 27-hole golf course…fancy a tee-off?

Breckenridge is home to more than 15 world-class spas offering the most luxurious treatments imaginable—detox therapy, body wraps, therapeutic massages, or deep-tissue cleansing. Whether you are looking for a romantic couples’ treatment, a ladies’ night out package, a nutritional evaluation, or just a pedicure and a manicure, a Breck spa promises to cater to your every need. And you can even choose your own ambience for your spa day—you can pick a cozy mountain retreat, choose a modern oasis of wellness, or even opt for a private treatment in your own condo.

You must have realized by now that everything about Breckenridge is all about year-round adventure and fun. If you are not enticed by outdoor pursuits, you can immerse yourself in the independent restaurant scene, find the perfect gift downtown, or pursue fine art in the Breckenridge Arts District. Historic tours, cooking classes, and theater performances will satisfy the culture vulture in you. The only challenge you will face in Breckenridge is how to fit everything in.
